100% rPET bottle – Coca Cola
Coca Cola Company has completed the expansion of its product portfolio nationwide, using 100% recycled plastic * 20 ounce bottles for its Coca Cola trademark products (Coca Cola, Diet Coke, Zero Coke, and various flavors of cola), achieving the adoption of 100% recycled plastic * bottles for the carbonated brand throughout the United States.
Through this initiative, the company expects to reduce the use of nearly 80 million pounds of new plastic, equivalent to nearly 2 billion plastic bottles, by 2024. This packaging transformation also means that every 100% recycled plastic bottle can reduce energy consumption, carbon emissions, and waste, helping Coca Cola take a tangible step towards its goal of having 50% recycled materials in all bottles and cans by 2030, which is an important pillar of its “waste free world” strategy.
Now, retail stores across the country can buy 20 ounce 100% recycled plastic Coca Cola branded bottles. The new label prominently features the words’ recycle me again ‘to indicate that the bottle contains recycled materials and encourage people to take action to recycle the bottle, so that it may be remanufactured again.
Multiple countries promote rPET
Coca Cola is launching 500ml bottles made of 100% rPET in Hong Kong, Indonesia, and the Philippines, aiming to provide 100% recyclable packaging by 2025 and achieve 50% use of recycled materials on its packaging production line by 2030. And it will be launched in the remaining six states of Coca Cola United (Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Tennessee) in 2024.
It is reported that all 500ml original Coca Cola, sugar free Coca Cola, and Plus Coca Cola bottles currently sold in the country, except for bottle caps and labels, are made of 100% rPET. The text on the packaging includes “I am a 100% rPET bottle” and “Recycle me again”, aimed at raising consumer awareness and encouraging consumers to dispose of their bottles through the plastic recycling process.
This important milestone is a step towards Indonesia’s development of a closed-loop circular economy and emphasizes CCEP’s commitment to achieving the goal of using 50% recycled plastic in packaging by 2025. This goal is consistent with Coca Cola’s sustainable development vision of “a world without waste”.
Environmental Contribution
The launch of 100% rPET bottles marks a significant contribution to this goal, reducing Indonesia’s dependence on new plastics and lowering carbon emissions in the production process.
This transformation supports Coca Cola’s goal of a “waste free world”, which is to use at least 50% recycled materials in packaging and reduce the use of virgin plastics by 2030. It is expected that by 2024 alone, the company will save 7.6 million pounds of new plastic and reduce nearly 7000 metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions annually, which is equivalent to cutting nearly 1500 cars off the road within a year.
