Polyetherimide (PEI)

Polyetherimide (PEI) is a member of the high-performance polyimide family of materials that also includes polyamideimide (PAI). PEI is an amorphous thermoplastic whose polymer structure contains ether (E) linkages attached to the polyimide (PI) molecular structure.

In its basic form, polyetherimide is a clear amber color. Performance characteristics include high strength-to-weight ratio, high strength retention at temperatures up to 390°F (200°C), long-term resistance to thermal oxidation, good electrical properties, and inherent chemical resistance and flame retardancy. Polyetherimide is also recognized for its ability to maintain performance after prolonged exposure to steam and hot water, which is beneficial for food processing equipment and medical applications that require aggressive cleaning or sterilization.

Application Areas

PEI has a wide range of applications in a variety of fields, including:

Healthcare: Used to manufacture reusable medical devices such as stopcocks, instrument trays, sterilization trays, etc.

Electronic and Electrical: Used in connectors, housings and reflectors, etc. due to its good electrical properties, high temperature resistance and dimensional stability.

Automotive: Used in automotive lighting applications such as headlight and fog light reflectors, bulb sockets and frames.
Aerospace: Used in steering wheels, air and fuel valves, interior cladding parts, etc. due to its excellent heat resistance and flame retardancy.

Pharmaceutical: Used in chemical laboratory equipment and pharmaceutical process equipment such as manifolds, containers and accessories.

Environmental Significance

The recycling of PEI helps to reduce resource waste and environmental pollution. Through recycling, waste materials can be reused, reducing the demand for new materials, reducing production costs, and reducing environmental burden. With the enhancement of environmental awareness, the recycling of PEI has also received more and more attention, promoting the recycling of resources and the development of environmental protection industry.

Polyetherimide (PEI) has good recycling characteristics, and there is no significant difference in performance between recycled and regenerated materials and virgin materials. PEI has excellent high temperature resistance, mechanical strength, electrical insulation and flame retardancy, which make it widely used in many fields.

Recycling Technology

PEI recycling is mainly carried out through physical and chemical methods:

Physical recycling: including crushing, screening, melting and other steps to convert waste PEI into reusable particles or blocks. These recycled materials can be used to produce new PEI or as additives to other materials.

Chemical recycling: waste PEI is converted into small molecule compounds through chemical reactions such as pyrolysis or depolymerization, which can further synthesize new PEI or other compounds.
